Cost to register a car after moving to Alaska
No single total applies to every vehicle. Start with the state rule, then enter the vehicle, county, purchase, tax-credit, inspection, title, and plate amounts that apply to your transaction.
What the official rule establishes
- Registration and title
- Apply for Alaska registration within 10 days after entering the state or taking an Alaska job when you intend to establish residency.
- Tax and fees
- Registration is generally issued for two years, and the amount varies by vehicle type and location; use Alaska DMV's registration calculator before filing.
- Inspection or VIN
- Some transfers require a vehicle inspection. Alaska may issue temporary registration when an inspection must be completed.
- Insurance
- Keep coverage in force through the move and confirm that the policy satisfies Alaska's requirements before operating the Alaska-registered vehicle.
Do not treat a generic estimate as a tax determination. Vehicle value, purchase timing, trade credit, prior tax, county, weight, plate type, and local fees can change the total.
