Moving a financed or leased car to another state?

Find out what your lender or leasing company must send, what your new state accepts instead of the original title, and your registration deadline, with official forms and links for both states.

Where these moves get stuck

Start with what's going wrong

A lender or leasing company can hold the title, the DMV can turn you away without it, or your old state can send a notice before the new registration is done. Start with the one that matches your move.

Your new plates aren't always the end of the move

Your old state may still want its plates, a cancellation receipt, or proof of the new registration. We put those steps on the same timeline as your move.

Here's what a real route looks like
FROMNYNew York
TONCNorth Carolina
  1. 1
    Keep New York coverage active

Do not replace it with out-of-state coverage while NY plates remain active.

  2. 2
    Get the North Carolina license

NCDMV requires the credential before the vehicle transaction.

  3. 3
    Activate NC insurance and registration

Out-of-state policies are not accepted for North Carolina registration.

  4. 4
Surrender New York plates, then cancel NY insurance

The reverse order can create a registration and license suspension.

Save the parts you need to track

The guide works without an email. Save it when you need to mark tasks, record a date, follow a title request, or note a plate return.

  • Mark each route step as not started, in progress, or done
  • Add move, registration, insurance, and follow-up dates
  • Track title requests, replies, and which receipts you have kept
  • Return through a private email link, with no password
