Destination cost ledger
Cost to register a car after moving to Colorado
No single total applies to every vehicle. Start with the state rule, then enter the vehicle, county, purchase, tax-credit, inspection, title, and plate amounts that apply to your transaction.
What the official rule establishes
- Registration and title
- Register the vehicle through the county motor vehicle office within 90 days after becoming a resident.
- Tax and fees
- Ownership tax and registration fees vary by vehicle and county.
- Inspection or VIN
- An out-of-state vehicle needs VIN verification; an emissions test may also be required by county.
- Insurance
- Bring proof of Colorado-compliant insurance for the vehicle.
Do not treat a generic estimate as a tax determination. Vehicle value, purchase timing, trade credit, prior tax, county, weight, plate type, and local fees can change the total.
