Cost to register a car after moving to Connecticut
No single total applies to every vehicle. Start with the state rule, then enter the vehicle, county, purchase, tax-credit, inspection, title, and plate amounts that apply to your transaction.
What the official rule establishes
- Registration and title
- Transfer the out-of-state registration within 90 days. Connecticut allows a combined appointment when the license and vehicle transactions are both ready.
- Tax and fees
- Review the DMV fee estimate and clear any delinquent Connecticut property-tax or parking-ticket holds before the appointment.
- Inspection or VIN
- Complete the required emissions test or VIN verification before the registration appointment. The vehicle's age and exemption status determine which applies.
- Insurance
- Bring proof of insurance that meets Connecticut's minimum requirements for the registration transaction.
Do not treat a generic estimate as a tax determination. Vehicle value, purchase timing, trade credit, prior tax, county, weight, plate type, and local fees can change the total.
