Cost to register a car after moving to Delaware
No single total applies to every vehicle. Start with the state rule, then enter the vehicle, county, purchase, tax-credit, inspection, title, and plate amounts that apply to your transaction.
What the official rule establishes
- Registration and title
- Title and register the vehicle within 60 days after becoming a Delaware resident.
- Tax and fees
- Delaware assesses a vehicle document fee based on value, subject to a prior-tax exception for certain vehicles titled and registered in the other state within 90 days. Confirm current fees and bring proof of prior tax.
- Inspection or VIN
- Take the out-of-state vehicle through a Delaware DMV inspection lane before title and registration. Every vehicle receives a safety inspection; model year and weight determine whether additional inspection or VIN work applies.
- Insurance
- Arrange liability coverage accepted by Delaware before the transaction. DMV requires current proof and does not accept a photo or ordinary printout of an insurance card.
Do not treat a generic estimate as a tax determination. Vehicle value, purchase timing, trade credit, prior tax, county, weight, plate type, and local fees can change the total.
