Cost to register a car after moving to Hawaii

What the official rule establishes
- Registration and title
- Vehicle transactions are county-administered. In Hawaii County, obtain an out-of-state permit within 30 days after the vehicle arrives or switch to Hawaii plates; the permanent-registration path and timing vary by island.
- Tax and fees
- Registration charges and any county-specific taxes or fees depend on the island and vehicle. Confirm the exact amount with the destination county office.
- Inspection or VIN
- Plan for a Hawaii safety check. An incoming vehicle can initially receive a failed or temporary inspection for registration only, then must return for the final sticker after it has Hawaii registration.
- Insurance
- Arrange Hawaii coverage before the safety-check and registration sequence. County instructions require a Hawaii insurance card for the inspection transaction.
