Destination cost ledger
Cost to register a car after moving to Maine
No single total applies to every vehicle. Start with the state rule, then enter the vehicle, county, purchase, tax-credit, inspection, title, and plate amounts that apply to your transaction.
What the official rule establishes
- Registration and title
- Convert the vehicle title and registration within 30 days after establishing Maine residency. Pay the municipal excise tax before completing the registration through the municipality or BMV.
- Tax and fees
- Pay municipal excise tax first and bring the use-tax exemption form, current registration, and applicable title and registration fees to the final transaction.
- Inspection or VIN
- Maine vehicles are subject to an annual safety inspection. Confirm the incoming vehicle's inspection timing before operating it on public roads.
- Insurance
- Bring proof of Maine motor-vehicle insurance to the registration transaction and keep prior-state coverage active until the old registration is safely closed.
Do not treat a generic estimate as a tax determination. Vehicle value, purchase timing, trade credit, prior tax, county, weight, plate type, and local fees can change the total.
