Destination cost ledger
Cost to register a car after moving to Minnesota
No single total applies to every vehicle. Start with the state rule, then enter the vehicle, county, purchase, tax-credit, inspection, title, and plate amounts that apply to your transaction.
What the official rule establishes
- Registration and title
- Register a passenger vehicle, motorcycle, utility trailer, or house trailer within 60 days after becoming a Minnesota resident. Registration is due immediately if the prior registration has expired.
- Tax and fees
- Review the DVS title, registration, plate, and filing fees before submitting the transaction.
- Inspection or VIN
- No single statewide inspection amount applies to every new-resident vehicle.
- Insurance
- Bring the insurer name, policy number, and policy expiration date for the registration transaction.
Do not treat a generic estimate as a tax determination. Vehicle value, purchase timing, trade credit, prior tax, county, weight, plate type, and local fees can change the total.
