What the official rule establishes
- Registration and title
- The title and registration share the same 60-day-or-expiration deadline, and MVC allows both transfers in one appointment.
- Tax and fees
- Confirm title, registration, and sales/use-tax treatment with MVC before the appointment.
- Inspection or VIN
- Confirm the post-registration inspection deadline and station requirements for the vehicle.
- Insurance
- Bring New Jersey insurance information to the title and registration transaction.
Do not treat a generic estimate as a tax determination. Vehicle value, purchase timing, trade credit, prior tax, county, weight, plate type, and local fees can change the total.
