Destination cost ledger

Cost to register a car after moving to North Dakota

No single total applies to every vehicle. Start with the state rule, then enter the vehicle, county, purchase, tax-credit, inspection, title, and plate amounts that apply to your transaction.

What the official rule establishes

Registration and title
Submit the North Dakota title and registration application with the out-of-state ownership document and proof of legal name. The current motor-vehicle guidance does not publish one general new-resident day-count deadline.
Tax and fees
Prepare the title, registration, and abandoned-vehicle-disposal fees. Motor-vehicle excise tax depends on the transaction and prior ownership facts, so confirm the new-resident treatment before payment.
Inspection or VIN
No single statewide inspection amount applies to every new-resident vehicle.
Insurance
Maintain North Dakota's required motor-vehicle liability coverage before operating the vehicle and keep proof available through the transition.
Use the agency or county calculator for the final amount

Do not treat a generic estimate as a tax determination. Vehicle value, purchase timing, trade credit, prior tax, county, weight, plate type, and local fees can change the total.
