Destination cost ledger
Cost to register a car after moving to Rhode Island
No single total applies to every vehicle. Start with the state rule, then enter the vehicle, county, purchase, tax-credit, inspection, title, and plate amounts that apply to your transaction.
What the official rule establishes
- Registration and title
- Obtain a Rhode Island title and registration within 30 days after moving.
- Tax and fees
- Bring the applicable tax-exemption certificate and affidavit, and review the DMV fee table before the transaction.
- Inspection or VIN
- Complete the required VIN check before registration, then have the vehicle inspected within five days after registration.
- Insurance
- Use liability coverage from an insurer licensed to do business in Rhode Island.
Do not treat a generic estimate as a tax determination. Vehicle value, purchase timing, trade credit, prior tax, county, weight, plate type, and local fees can change the total.
