Cost to register a car after moving to West Virginia
No single total applies to every vehicle. Start with the state rule, then enter the vehicle, county, purchase, tax-credit, inspection, title, and plate amounts that apply to your transaction.
What the official rule establishes
- Registration and title
- Title and register the vehicle within 30 days after establishing West Virginia residency.
- Tax and fees
- A same-owner new-resident transfer can qualify for the published 6% titling-sales-tax exemption when the application and required proof are submitted within 30 days; title, lien, and registration fees still apply.
- Inspection or VIN
- Complete the West Virginia safety inspection within 10 days after titling unless a qualifying reciprocal out-of-state inspection remains valid.
- Insurance
- List insurance from a company licensed to sell coverage in West Virginia on the title application and carry the current insurance certificate with the registration card.
Do not treat a generic estimate as a tax determination. Vehicle value, purchase timing, trade credit, prior tax, county, weight, plate type, and local fees can change the total.
