Keep or sell decision

Sell a car before moving out of Hawaii

A sale can remove destination transport and registration costs, but it also creates a title, plate, registration, insurance, and possible tax closeout in Hawaii.

Old-state closeout

Notify the Hawaii county vehicle office within 30 days

After the destination registration is active, write to the Hawaii county finance office that holds the old vehicle record within 30 days of the address change. Include the old and new addresses and keep a copy with the new registration. Ask that county whether it needs any additional step for the old plate or record.
