The state rules behind the ledger
- Destination title and registration
- Title the vehicle, then register it and get Virginia plates at a Virginia DMV customer service center, each within 30 days of moving to Virginia. Some localities also require new residents to buy a local sticker or decal within 30 days of moving there. Also notify the destination locality for vehicle property-tax records.
- Destination tax and fees
- Local vehicle property tax and registration fees can apply in addition to DMV charges.
- Inspection or VIN
- Confirm the Virginia safety-inspection timing and any emissions requirement for the destination locality.
- Old-state recovery
- No source-complete North Carolina move-out refund rule is currently available in the calculator. Do not count an unverified refund as savings.
