Do I have to register my vehicle in Louisiana?

Under RS 47:502.2, a nonresident owner of a vehicle registered in a foreign (other) state who is a member of the U.S. armed forces on active duty within Louisiana (or the member's spouse) may operate the vehicle in Louisiana without securing Louisiana registration, provided the plates/registration are current and issued to the member or spouse, and financial responsibility (insurance) requirements under R.S. 32:861 are met. Can I keep driving on my current license in Louisiana?

Louisiana law (RS 32:404, cross-referenced from RS 32:402) governs operation of motor vehicles by nonresidents, students, and military personnel and dependents. A resident dependent of a person on active duty stationed in Louisiana but domiciled in another state may drive without a Louisiana license (using a valid home-state license and military dependent ID) during the period of residency with the servicemember and for not more than 90 days thereafter. Active-duty servicemembers themselves generally must meet Title 32 licensing requirements 'except as to residence,' i.e., their nonresident status does not by itself require a Louisiana license.

Spouse and dependents

For vehicle registration, RS 47:502.2 explicitly extends the nonresident registration exemption to 'a member or spouse of a member of the armed forces ... on active duty within this state,' so the spouse gets the same registration exemption as the servicemember. For driving privileges, a resident dependent (which includes a spouse) of an out-of-state-domiciled active-duty member may drive on a home-state license during the residency period and for 90 days after it ends.

Fee waivers and tax exemptions

Use tax exemption for vehicle purchased in another state by active-duty member stationed in Louisiana

RS 47:305.48 exempts, from Louisiana's vehicle use tax, a motor vehicle previously purchased in another state by active-duty military personnel stationed in Louisiana, at the time of transfer of registration, provided sales tax was imposed and collected in the state of purchase. The exemption continues as long as the registered owner remains on active duty and stationed in Louisiana.

What to know as a new Louisiana resident

Louisiana Revenue Information Bulletin 25-011 addresses calculation of use tax on vehicles registered by new residents generally (a cap on use tax for qualifying vehicles registered on/after Jan 1, 2025), which is a general new-resident provision, not military-specific. The military-specific provision found is RS 47:305.48, which exempts from use tax a vehicle purchased in another state by an active-duty member who is stationed in Louisiana (this is framed as an exemption tied to being stationed there while still on active duty, and it appears to apply regardless of whether the member's home of record is Louisiana or elsewhere, though official guidance should be confirmed directly with the Louisiana Department of Revenue for a servicemember becoming a Louisiana resident).
