Do I have to register my vehicle in Maryland?

A servicemember only temporarily stationed in Maryland is not required to fully title/register the vehicle as a Maryland vehicle, but must apply for a Maryland MVA non-resident permit (a sticker placed on the vehicle) in lieu of full registration. The permit is valid for one year or until the current home-state registration expires, whichever comes first.

Can I keep driving on my current license in Maryland?

Under Transportation Article 16-102(a)(7), a member of the uniformed services serving on active duty (and any dependent of the member) is exempt from the Maryland driver's license requirement if the driver possesses a valid license from their state of domicile that authorizes driving the class of vehicle being driven in Maryland.

Spouse and dependents

The driver's license exemption in Transportation Article 16-102(a)(7) explicitly extends to 'any dependent of the member' (which includes a spouse), on the same terms as the servicemember. The Maryland MVA's vehicle registration/titling/inspections page for military members does not separately address spouse treatment for the nonresident vehicle permit or excise tax waiver.

Renewal grace period while deployed

A Maryland resident servicemember who is away on active duty (including U.S. Foreign Service) gets 30 days from returning to the state, separating from the uniformed/foreign service, or being discharged from active service, to renew their Maryland driver's license. Maryland licenses also remain in effect for active U.S. Foreign Service members and their dependents residing with them outside Maryland during their absence, and military members stationed outside Maryland can apply for an absentee driver's license.

You have 30 days from the date you return to the State, are separated from employment in the uniformed service or U.S. Foreign Service, or are discharged from active service, to renew you driver's license.

What to know as a new Maryland resident

A servicemember whose vehicle is already titled in their own name in another state can transfer that title into Maryland with the excise (titling) tax waived, as long as ownership does not change in the transfer; this waiver remains available for up to one year after discharge. Separately, a person whose home of record is Maryland but who is on active duty and stationed outside Maryland may apply for a Maryland vehicle safety-inspection waiver at the time they apply for the vehicle's Maryland title.
