Motor vehicle excise tax exemption for deployed Massachusetts resident servicemembers

Chapter 60A, Section 1 exempts from the Massachusetts motor vehicle excise a vehicle owned and registered by (or leased to) a Massachusetts resident who is in active, full-time military service (armed forces, National Guard, or reserves) and who has been deployed or stationed outside Massachusetts for at least 180 continuous days in the calendar year of the exemption.

The excise imposed by this chapter shall not apply to a motor vehicle owned and registered by or leased to a resident who is in active and full-time military service as a member in the armed forces of the United States or the national guard or reserves, army or air, of any state and has been deployed or stationed outside the territorial boundaries of the commonwealth for a period of at least 180 continuous days in the calendar year of the exemption.

Motor vehicle excise exemption for nonresidents whose vehicle is registered elsewhere

Chapter 60A, Section 1 also exempts from the Massachusetts excise a vehicle belonging to an inhabitant of another state that is customarily kept in, and also currently registered in, that other state -- relevant to a nonresident military member whose vehicle remains titled/registered in their home state.
