Do I have to register my vehicle in Mississippi?

Mississippi does not require military personnel (or their dependents) stationed in Mississippi to register their vehicle in Mississippi, as long as they continue to claim another state as their home/residence. If the servicemember becomes a Mississippi resident, standard registration is required.

Can I keep driving on my current license in Mississippi?

A member of an active or reserve component of the U.S. Armed Forces who holds a valid home-state driver's license may drive in Mississippi without a Mississippi license, with no stated time limit, and this exemption is unaffected even if the member owns a vehicle registered in Mississippi.

A member of any active or reserve component branch of the United States of America Armed Forces, or a spouse or a dependent child not less than sixteen (16) years of age of a member of any active or reserve component branch of the United States of America Armed Forces, who has been licensed as a driver under a law requiring the licensing of drivers in his home state and who has in his immediate possession a valid driver's license issued to him in his home state shall be permitted without examination or license under this article to drive a motor vehicle on public roads, streets and highways of the State of Mississippi. The provisions of this paragraph shall not be affected by the person's, spouse's or dependent child's ownership of a motor vehicle registered in the State of Mississippi.

Spouse and dependents

Mississippi explicitly extends both the driver's license exemption (Miss. Code 63-1-7(f), covering a spouse or dependent child age 16+) and the vehicle registration exemption (DOR FAQ, which groups 'military personnel and their dependents' together) to the servicemember's spouse/dependents, so long as they claim another state as home.

Disabled veteran plate - ad valorem and privilege tax exemption

A veteran (or surviving spouse) verified by the VA as having a 100% permanent service-connected disability, or a 70% non-permanent service-connected disability, may register up to 2 vehicles and 1 motorcycle exempt from all ad valorem and privilege taxes, for a $1.00 fee per plate. Regular fees apply to any additional vehicles beyond that.

A qualified veteran may register up to: 2 vehicles; and 1 motorcycle. These are exempt from all ad valorem and privilege taxes. A $1.00 fee applies for each plate.

Military driver's license renewal by mail - no late fee

A Mississippi driver's license holder in the armed services (and their spouse/dependents) who is out of state on military orders when the license expires can renew by mail, and no late fee is charged even if the license has expired.

Please send Certified check or money order made out to the Department of Public Safety - $24.00 for regular 4-year renewal, $25.00 if expired; or $47.00 for an 8-year renewal, $48.00 if expired. No late fee will be charged.

Renewal grace period while deployed

Any person in the U.S. armed services, and their spouses and dependents, holding a Mississippi driver's license who is out of state due to military service when the license expires may renew by mail (submitting a photocopy of the Mississippi license and the first page of military orders showing the current duty station), with no late fee charged even for an expired license. Renewal by mail is also allowed up to six months before expiration.

Any person in the armed services of the United States and their spouses and dependents, holding a Mississippi driver's license and being out of state due to military service at the time said license expires may renew said license by mail with the following documents: A photocopy of your Mississippi driver's license; and, First page of military orders placing you at your current duty station.
