Do I have to register my vehicle in New Hampshire?

New Hampshire has a narrow military-specific vehicle exemption (RSA 261:41) that only exempts a vehicle displaying plates issued directly by the U.S. armed forces, and only for 7 days after the owner enters the state. For the more common case of a servicemember's vehicle registered/plated by their home STATE (not by the armed forces itself), the general nonresident reciprocity statute (RSA 261:44) applies: such a vehicle may be driven in New Hampshire without New Hampshire registration for as long as the home state/district/country grants New Hampshire residents similar reciprocal privileges -- New Hampshire does not appear to impose its own fixed day-limit in that section. Neither section is written as an unconditional, indefinite military registration exemption.

The provisions of this chapter relative to the registration of vehicles and the display of number plates shall not apply to vehicles having registration and displaying plates issued by the armed forces of the United States for vehicles owned by military personnel, but such exemption shall be valid only for a period of 7 days after the owner thereof has entered this state for the purpose of traveling to either his place of residence or a point of military duty.

Can I keep driving on my current license in New Hampshire?

A member of the National Guard who is called to military service or mobilized for 60 days or more, and who was a New Hampshire resident holding a valid New Hampshire driver's license, is entitled to renew that license without cost or penalty.

Any member of the national guard who is called to military service or mobilized for a period of 60 days or more, and who was a resident of this state and was a holder of a valid New Hampshire license to drive motor vehicles in this state, is entitled to renewal of such license without cost or penalty by application to the division.

Renewal grace period while deployed

New Hampshire preserves residency status (rather than granting a fixed extension period) for a resident who is on active duty in the armed forces, or a federal employee, deployed outside the United States -- they are not treated as having lost New Hampshire residence solely because of that deployment, which supports continued eligibility to register vehicles/renew credentials as a New Hampshire resident while away. Separately, mobilized National Guard members (60+ days) who held a valid New Hampshire driver's license are entitled to renew it without cost or penalty (see feeWaivers).

Any resident of this state who is on active duty to the armed forces of the United States, or who is employed by the State Department or other agency of the United States government shall not be considered as having lost residence when the sole reason for the person's absence is compliance with military or naval orders or federal agency orders that require deployment outside of the United States.
