Can I keep driving on my current license in Ohio?

Ohio's general nonresident-driver reciprocity statute allows a person validly licensed in another state to operate a motor vehicle in Ohio without obtaining an Ohio driver's license (subject to being able to prove lawful possession of the vehicle and identity if asked). This reciprocity provision is not military-specific, but applies to a nonresident military member stationed in Ohio the same as it would to any other nonresident who has not established Ohio residency.

Nonresidents, permitted to drive upon the highways of their own state, may operate any motor vehicle upon any highway in this state without examination or license under sections 4507.01 to 4507.39, inclusive, of the Revised Code, upon condition that such nonresidents may be required at any time or place to prove lawful possession, or their right to operate, such motor vehicle, and to establish proper identity.

Spouse and dependents

Ohio's driver's-license military exemption statute expressly extends to a spouse or dependent: if an Ohio licensee's active duty or military/foreign-service assignment causes the spouse or dependent (who was also an Ohio licensee at the time the member's duty began) to relocate outside Ohio, that spouse or dependent likewise remains exempt from Ohio license renewal requirements for the period of duty plus six months. Renewal grace period while deployed

An Ohio driver's license held by an Ohio licensee who enters active duty in the U.S. armed forces (or Peace Corps, VISTA, or the foreign service) remains valid without needing renewal for the entire period of that active duty or service, plus six months afterward, provided the person already held the Ohio license when the duty/service began. The statute also confirms this does not prevent the person (or their qualifying spouse/dependent) from voluntarily applying to renew during that period.

What to know as a new Ohio resident

Ohio BMV allows active-duty military personnel stationed or deployed outside Ohio, and their dependents, to renew an Ohio driver's license, ID card, or motorcycle license online, and permits those renewing an Ohio license that has been expired more than six months to skip the knowledge/driving tests otherwise required for an expired renewal. Ohio's E-check vehicle emissions testing program applies only in specific counties (noted on the BMV's military vehicle-registration page), so any inspection obligation for a servicemember would depend on the county of vehicle registration rather than a single statewide rule.
