Do I have to register my vehicle in Washington?

Washington treats military personnel temporarily stationed in Washington as nonresidents (unless they were Washington residents when inducted) and does not force immediate re-registration: they may continue operating on their current out-of-state (or home-of-record) registration until it expires, at which point they must license the vehicle in Washington or in their home of record. A nonresident member may instead display Washington plates, home-of-record plates, or foreign-jurisdiction plates. If licensed in a foreign country, the vehicle must be licensed in Washington or the home state within 30 days of returning to the U.S. Nonresident military may also obtain a 45-day temporary vehicle permit when buying a vehicle while stationed in Washington, which lets them operate the vehicle while applying for out-of-state registration without paying WA sales/use/excise tax (subject to conditions).

Military personnel temporarily stationed in Washington are considered nonresidents unless they were residents of Washington State when inducted. You may continue to operate it with the current registration until it expires. Then you must license the vehicle in Washington State or your home of record.

Can I keep driving on my current license in Washington?

Washington's general nonresident driver's-license exemption statute (not military-specific, but applicable to servicemembers as nonresidents) allows a nonresident who is at least 16 and has a valid driver's license from their home state in their immediate possession to operate a motor vehicle in Washington without a Washington license. Washington DOL's military pages did not add a separate or narrower military-specific nonresident-license rule; they instead focus on license validity/renewal for Washington-licensed servicemembers who are on active duty or deployed.

Spouse and dependents

For nonresident vehicle registration, Washington DOL extends the same continue-on-current-registration flexibility to the servicemember's spouse, as long as the vehicle is registered to the servicemember alone or jointly to the servicemember and spouse. For Washington resident servicemembers stationed outside the state, a spouse who is a co-owner and shares Washington as home of record may likewise license a vehicle in Washington. For driver licensing, a military dependent (spouse/domestic partner) who shares a residence with the active-duty member can obtain a DOL Authorization Card, which along with a Military Dependent ID documents that the license remains valid without renewal during the member's active-duty term.

Fee waivers and tax exemptions

Sales/use/excise tax exemption under the 45-day nonresident temporary vehicle permit

A nonresident active-duty servicemember (Coast Guard, Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, NOAA, Public Health Service commissioned officers, or foreign military on official duty) who buys a vehicle while serving in Washington can obtain a 45-day temporary vehicle permit by submitting a Non-Resident Military Affidavit for Exemption of Excise Tax and proof of an out-of-state registration application. Sales tax, use tax, and motor vehicle excise tax are not owed unless the vehicle stays in Washington beyond 3 months, or the owner brings it back to Washington within one year after the permit expires.

Short-stay sales/use tax exemption

A nonresident servicemember who will be in Washington for less than 90 days may be exempt from Washington sales or use tax on their vehicle; if in Washington more than 90 days, Washington sales or use tax must be paid even if the vehicle is registered in the member's home state.

Renewal grace period while deployed

A Washington resident's driver license remains valid without renewal for the entire term of active military duty, regardless of the printed expiration date, and for 90 days after discharge; the servicemember should carry a military active-duty ID and a DOL Authorization Card as evidence. Separately, for vehicle registration, a Washington resident stationed outside Washington whose vehicle tabs expired while stationed away can get a new expiration date valid for a full 12-month period from the date they apply, upon showing military orders proving they were stationed outside Washington for at least 90 days and a Leave and Earnings Statement showing Washington as home of record.
