Do I have to register my vehicle in Wyoming?

Wyoming vehicle registration is administered by county treasurers under state law, and county treasurer offices implement a statewide military nonresidence exemption: a nonresident military member stationed in Wyoming is not required to register a (non-leased) vehicle in Wyoming and may instead qualify for an exemption from Wyoming vehicle registration/ad valorem tax by submitting a current Leave and Earnings Statement, military ID, current driver's license, current copy of orders, and a signed 'Application and Affidavit of Nonresidence and Military Service Exemption From Motor Vehicle Ad Valorem Tax.' The exemption covers vehicle registration costs but not sales tax owed on a vehicle purchase, and does not apply to a leased vehicle.

Can I keep driving on my current license in Wyoming?

Wyoming Statute 31-7-107 (Persons exempted) exempts from Wyoming driver's-license requirements a nonresident on active duty in the U.S. armed forces who holds a valid license from their state of residence, and separately and expressly exempts that servicemember's spouse or dependent son or daughter who holds a valid license issued by their own state of residence.

Spouse and dependents

For the nonresident driver's-license exemption, W.S. 31-7-107(iii) explicitly extends the same exemption to the servicemember's spouse or dependent son/daughter holding a valid license from their own state of residence. For Wyoming-resident license renewal, a Wyoming driver's license held by a military dependent may likewise be renewed by mail or online as often as necessary while the dependent lives with the active-duty member away from Wyoming, though (unlike the active-duty member, who renews free of charge) the dependent must pay the standard renewal fee and must provide a letter from the active-duty servicemember confirming they live together at the duty station.

Military dependents may renew by mail or online as often as necessary; however, when in Wyoming again, you will need to appear in person at a local driver exam office to be issued a new license with an updated photo.

Nonresident military ad valorem/registration tax exemption

A nonresident active-duty servicemember stationed in Wyoming who chooses to register a vehicle in Wyoming (rather than keep home-state registration) can obtain an exemption from Wyoming vehicle registration/ad valorem tax by submitting a current Leave and Earnings Statement and a completed, officer-signed Application and Affidavit of Nonresidence and Military Service Exemption From Motor Vehicle Ad Valorem Tax.

Renewal grace period while deployed

An active-duty servicemember who presents a valid active-duty military ID card when applying for or renewing a Wyoming driver's license receives an 'I' (Limited Other) restriction on the license, which waives the printed expiration date as long as the license is accompanied by current active-duty orders or a valid active-duty military ID card -- effectively letting the license remain valid for the length of active-duty service without a renewal deadline.

A special statement will be displayed on your driver's license that indicates the license expiration date is waived when accompanied by an active-duty military ID card.
