Move a Motorboat and Trailer to Kentucky
Title and register the motorboat through the county clerk, then handle its operator rules and road trailer as separate tasks.
Prepare the boat and trailer before the office visit
The government instructions are free. We show a private provider only when it is authorized for this vehicle and task.
- 1. Check when the application becomes due
Kentucky motorboat registrations expire on April 30. A visiting motorboat with valid out-of-state numbering may use Kentucky waters for up to 60 consecutive days, but a Kentucky owner should use the resident county-clerk process rather than relying on the visitor exception.
- 2. Prepare the correct ownership record
Apply through the county clerk. For a new motorboat, bring the bill of sale. If it was last registered in Kentucky, bring the Kentucky registration receipt. If it was last registered in another state, bring both the bill of sale and the prior registration receipt.
- 3. Complete identification and inspection
Bring the records requested for the vessel transaction. Handle the road trailer separately, and ask the county clerk whether it needs any information about the outboard motor.
- 4. Register the correct vehicle class
Complete the motorboat title and registration transaction with the county clerk and pay the annual fee. Registration and numbering exemptions are limited, including the 60-day rule for qualifying out-of-state visitors.
Check the exact vehicle class
For a motorboat over 10 horsepower, a Kentucky resident age 12 through 17 needs a boating-safety certificate or must be accompanied by a qualifying adult. A nonresident age 12 through 17 must possess a Kentucky certificate or a recognized equivalent. Title and register the road trailer separately.
