  1. 1. Check when the application becomes due

    Apply through South Carolina DNR when the watercraft moves onto South Carolina records. The temporary certificate can cover up to 60 days from a purchase, but it is not a general 60-day grace period for a boat you already owned before moving.

  2. 2. Prepare the correct ownership record

    Bring a title in your name when moving from a titling state, the current registration card or number, a tracing or photograph of the hull identification number, the completed application, and the fee. An outboard motor moving from one of the states South Carolina identifies as a motor-titling state also needs its title.

  3. 3. Complete identification and inspection

    A boat without a hull identification number needs an SCDNR-assigned number, a separate application, and photographs of both sides, the transom, and the whole boat. The highway trailer separately follows its title, identification, plate, and brake requirements.

  4. 4. Register the correct vehicle class

    South Carolina requires watercraft to be titled and registered except documented vessels, windsurfers, and craft propelled only by human power. Outboard motors under five horsepower do not require a title. The boat trailer separately follows the DMV's trailer class and travel rules.
