Prepare the motorcycle before the office visit

  1. 1. Check when the application becomes due

    California requires the original registration application within 20 days after registration becomes due, including when the owner becomes a California resident.

  2. 2. Prepare the correct ownership record

    Use REG 343 with the original out-of-state title and current registration. If the motorcycle is financed, provide the lienholder's name and address rather than asking the lender to release its lien.

  3. 3. Complete identification and inspection

    The out-of-state vehicle path requires VIN verification. Motorcycles do not need a smog check, but a noncertified motorcycle with fewer than 7,500 miles cannot be registered unless an exception applies.

  4. 4. Register the correct vehicle class

    Bring California-compliant insurance and complete the motorcycle registration path. The motorcycle license is a separate driver-license requirement.
