Move a Motorcycle to Minnesota

Register the motorcycle within 60 days after becoming a Minnesota resident, or immediately if its former registration has expired. The registration clock is separate from the driver-license and motorcycle-endorsement transaction.

Submit the current out-of-state title with the Minnesota title and registration application. If a lienholder retains it, Minnesota DVS lists limited alternative ownership records that can support registration only; Minnesota does not issue its title until it receives the current title. Bring the odometer reading, lien information, identification, and insurance details requested on the application.

The ordinary DVS new-resident checklist does not list a recurring safety or emissions inspection before registration. Confirm the VIN and ownership record with the deputy registrar; a reconstructed or salvage motorcycle, or a VIN that does not match the title or ownership record, needs the applicable DVS inspection and documentation path rather than this ordinary checklist.

A street motorcycle needs its own annual Minnesota registration and plate. If you bought and titled it in your name at least 60 days before the move, Minnesota Revenue says tax is not due when you register it. Otherwise, purchase timing and credit for tax paid to another state can affect the result, so keep the purchase agreement and proof of prior tax.
