  1. 1. Check when the application becomes due

    Complete the required county title and registration work within 90 days after establishing Colorado residency. Fees and ownership tax depend on the trailer's type, empty weight, county, and the date the Colorado obligation began.

    A trailer at 3,000 pounds gross weight or more must have brakes on all wheels, controllable from the tow vehicle, and automatic application after breakaway. Colorado lists narrow farm, fertilizer, and small horse-trailer exceptions, so do not apply those exceptions to an ordinary recreational or utility trailer without matching the exact facts.

  4. 4. Register the correct vehicle class

    Title and register the trailer through the county motor vehicle office on its own record. The application, plate, fees, and any lien remain separate from the tow vehicle even when the same owner moves both at once.
