    Do not cancel the Texas policy just because the vehicle crossed a state line. Keep the registration-supported coverage intact until the New Mexico registration is active and the Texas closeout rule is satisfied.

    Apply for a New Mexico driver license and surrender the out-of-state credential once residency is established. Bring the identity and residency documents required for the credential type you choose.

    Title and register the vehicle

    Title and register at an MVD field office with the ownership document, odometer reading, identity, two New Mexico residency proofs, and insurance evidence. The current new-resident page does not publish a general day-count deadline.

  8. Close TexasAfter the new registration is active

    Remove Texas plates and the windshield registration sticker

    After the destination registration and plates are active, remove the Texas plates and the Texas registration sticker from the windshield. If the plates will not be transferred to another eligible Texas vehicle or retained, TxDMV says to deface the front before disposal so they cannot be used fraudulently.

  9. Final check7–14 days after closeout

    Confirm both records are clean

    Verify that the New Mexico registration and insurance are active, the Texas registration is closed correctly, and no property-tax, toll, inspection, or renewal notice remains open.
