High-consequence handoff

What could slow down this move

This Virginia → Mississippi handoff has both deadline pressure and a documented closeout consequence.

02

Closeout proof

Never cancel Virginia insurance before surrendering or deactivating plates. Keep the agency receipt or confirmation before ending the old policy.

03

Title-chain bottleneck

Bring the current title and registration application. If a lienholder or lessor keeps the title, Mississippi accepts the current registration or duplicate-title evidence, holds the application while requesting the title, and will not renew the registration until the title is surrendered.

What to do, in order

  1. Before the move2–6 weeks before moving

Open the title chain before you need it

Bring the current title and registration application. If a lienholder or lessor keeps the title, Mississippi accepts the current registration or duplicate-title evidence, holds the application while requesting the title, and will not renew the registration until the title is surrendered.

  2. Before the moveUntil replacement registration is active

Keep the old registration and insurance alive

Do not cancel the Virginia policy just because the vehicle crossed a state line. Keep the registration-supported coverage intact until the Mississippi registration is active and the Virginia closeout rule is satisfied.

  3. Arriving in MississippiBefore the registration transaction

    Activate insurance Mississippi will accept

Maintain Mississippi liability coverage and keep the insurance card in the vehicle. The state notes that proof is required for operation even though registration offices do not enforce it as a filing prerequisite.

  4. Arriving in MississippiConfirm the license deadline

    Transfer the driver's license

Transfer the license at a Mississippi Driver Service Bureau office with the valid out-of-state credential, domicile evidence, Social Security documentation, and any name-change records. The current FAQ does not publish one general day-count deadline.

  5. Arriving in MississippiWithin 30 days

    Title and register the vehicle

Apply through the county Tax Collector within 30 days after moving while the prior registration remains valid. Mississippi publishes a $250 penalty in addition to standard late-registration penalties for missing the new-resident deadline.

  6. Close VirginiaAfter the new registration is active

Never cancel Virginia insurance before surrendering or deactivating plates

Activate replacement coverage, register in the new state, then surrender or deactivate Virginia plates. Notify the former locality as well so personal-property tax does not continue.

  7. Final check7–14 days after closeout

    Confirm both records are clean

Verify that the Mississippi registration and insurance are active, the Virginia registration is closed correctly, and no property-tax, toll, inspection, or renewal notice remains open.
