    Title and register the vehicle

    Title and register at an MVD field office with the ownership document, odometer reading, identity, two New Mexico residency proofs, and insurance evidence. The current new-resident page does not publish a general day-count deadline.

    Never cancel Virginia insurance before surrendering or deactivating plates

    Activate replacement coverage, register in the new state, then surrender or deactivate Virginia plates. Notify the former locality as well so personal-property tax does not continue.

    Confirm both records are clean

    Verify that the New Mexico registration and insurance are active, the Virginia registration is closed correctly, and no property-tax, toll, inspection, or renewal notice remains open.
