Florida private sale · New York registration

Buying a car privately in Florida to register in New York

The signed ownership trail has to survive the trip from the seller to New York DMV. Check the title, lien release, sale record, tax forms, and legal transport plan before money and possession change hands.

Four-part transaction

Connect the sale to the destination registration

  1. 01Inspect the ownership record

Confirm the titled owner is the seller, the title has no alterations, required odometer and damage disclosures are complete, and every recorded lien has an original release.

  2. 02Write the full sale record

Use a bill of sale with the vehicle, identification number, date, purchase price, and both parties. New York uses the purchase record to determine sales tax.

  3. 03Arrange lawful transport

Florida allows a 30-day temporary plate in specified private-sale and out-of-state-purchaser situations. Confirm eligibility and issuance with the Florida tax collector or license plate agency before driving.

  4. 04Submit the New York packet

Bring the assigned title, bill of sale, MV-82, tax form, identity evidence, and insurance proof. The out-of-state ownership document remains the controlling transfer record.

Document control

Do not leave the sale without the ownership trail

  • Original out-of-state title properly assigned by the titled seller
  • Bill of sale with vehicle, buyer, seller, date, and purchase price
  • Original lien release when a lien appears on the title
  • New York MV-82 registration and title application
  • New York DTF-802 for a casual sale or DTF-804 when claiming credit for eligible tax paid to another state
  • New York insurance proof before registration
