What to do with California plates after moving to Louisiana
The answer can be return, cancel, destroy, recycle, or keep. Follow the reviewed California instruction only after the Louisiana registration and insurance handoff are safe.
Complete the replacement record
Apply for Louisiana registration within 30 days after establishing residency. State law also requires a valid Louisiana safety-inspection certificate within that period.
Bring proof of current liability insurance to the title and registration transaction.
Update California DMV after the vehicle leaves the state
After the replacement registration is active, report the address change to California DMV within 10 days. If California sends a renewal notice, return it with the date the vehicle left and the state where it is now registered so the vehicle record is updated.
