What to do with California plates after moving to Michigan
The answer can be return, cancel, destroy, recycle, or keep. Follow the reviewed California instruction only after the Michigan registration and insurance handoff are safe.
Complete the replacement record
Michigan provides no new-resident grace period. Schedule an office visit to apply for the vehicle title and registration as soon as residency is established.
Michigan No-Fault insurance is required for registration. Michigan expressly says out-of-state vehicle insurance is not accepted.
Update California DMV after the vehicle leaves the state
After the replacement registration is active, report the address change to California DMV within 10 days. If California sends a renewal notice, return it with the date the vehicle left and the state where it is now registered so the vehicle record is updated.
