What to do with California plates after moving to Nevada

The answer can be return, cancel, destroy, recycle, or keep. Follow the reviewed California instruction only after the Nevada registration and insurance handoff are safe.

Complete the replacement record

Register the vehicle within 30 days after establishing residency. Nevada's major offices can process a noncommercial license and registration during the same visit.

Obtain Nevada evidence of insurance before registration; Nevada DMV does not accept an out-of-state policy for this transaction.

California closeout

Update California DMV after the vehicle leaves the state

After the replacement registration is active, report the address change to California DMV within 10 days. If California sends a renewal notice, return it with the date the vehicle left and the state where it is now registered so the vehicle record is updated.

  1. 1. Activate acceptable destination coverage

    Confirm the effective date with the new insurer.

  2. 2. Register in Nevada

    Keep the issued registration or official receipt.

  3. 3. Complete the California plate action

    Keep the surrender, cancellation, mailing, destruction, or retention record the state provides.

  4. 4. End or rewrite the old policy

    Ask the insurer to use dates that do not create an uncovered active registration.
