What to do with California plates after moving to New Mexico
The answer can be return, cancel, destroy, recycle, or keep. Follow the reviewed California instruction only after the New Mexico registration and insurance handoff are safe.
Complete the replacement record
Title and register at an MVD field office with the ownership document, odometer reading, identity, two New Mexico residency proofs, and insurance evidence. The current new-resident page does not publish a general day-count deadline.
Bring a current insurance card, policy copy, or insurer letter showing the required liability coverage.
Update California DMV after the vehicle leaves the state
After the replacement registration is active, report the address change to California DMV within 10 days. If California sends a renewal notice, return it with the date the vehicle left and the state where it is now registered so the vehicle record is updated.
