What to do with Delaware plates after moving to Michigan

The answer can be return, cancel, destroy, recycle, or keep. Follow the reviewed Delaware instruction only after the Michigan registration and insurance handoff are safe.

Complete the replacement record

Michigan provides no new-resident grace period. Schedule an office visit to apply for the vehicle title and registration as soon as residency is established.

Michigan No-Fault insurance is required for registration. Michigan expressly says out-of-state vehicle insurance is not accepted.

Delaware closeout

Surrender active Delaware plates before canceling insurance

After the destination registration is active, surrender any Delaware plate with active registration time to DMV and keep delivery or counter proof. Only then cancel the Delaware policy.
