What to do with Illinois plates after moving to New Mexico

The answer can be return, cancel, destroy, recycle, or keep. Follow the reviewed Illinois instruction only after the New Mexico registration and insurance handoff are safe.

New Mexico comes first

Complete the replacement record

Title and register at an MVD field office with the ownership document, odometer reading, identity, two New Mexico residency proofs, and insurance evidence. The current new-resident page does not publish a general day-count deadline.

Bring a current insurance card, policy copy, or insurer letter showing the required liability coverage.

After the destination registration is active, submit VSD 851, Vehicle License Plates Revocation Request, using the registered-owner-moved-out-of-state reason. Keep a copy and delivery proof before treating the old insurance record as closed.
