What to do with Illinois plates after moving to Oregon

The answer can be return, cancel, destroy, recycle, or keep. Follow the reviewed Illinois instruction only after the Oregon registration and insurance handoff are safe.

Oregon comes first

Complete the replacement record

Apply for Oregon title and registration within 30 days after becoming a resident. Oregon requires its title before it will issue the registration.

Maintain coverage that satisfies Oregon financial-responsibility law and make the required compliance statement on the title and registration application.

After the destination registration is active, submit VSD 851, Vehicle License Plates Revocation Request, using the registered-owner-moved-out-of-state reason. Keep a copy and delivery proof before treating the old insurance record as closed.
