What to do with Kansas plates after moving to Michigan

The answer can be return, cancel, destroy, recycle, or keep. Follow the reviewed Kansas instruction only after the Michigan registration and insurance handoff are safe.

Michigan comes first

Complete the replacement record

Michigan provides no new-resident grace period. Schedule an office visit to apply for the vehicle title and registration as soon as residency is established.

Michigan No-Fault insurance is required for registration. Michigan expressly says out-of-state vehicle insurance is not accepted.

Use the Kansas plate return to close the record and claim any refund

After the destination registration is active, take the Kansas plate and registration receipt to the county treasurer's motor-vehicle office in the county where the vehicle was registered. Moving out of state qualifies for a registration and property-tax refund; Kansas calculates it from the date the office receives the plate, so retain the office receipt and refund submission record.
