What to do with Kentucky plates after moving to Michigan

Michigan provides no new-resident grace period. Schedule an office visit to apply for the vehicle title and registration as soon as residency is established.

Michigan No-Fault insurance is required for registration. Michigan expressly says out-of-state vehicle insurance is not accepted.

Kentucky closeout

Turn in the Kentucky plate before canceling insurance

After the destination registration is active, surrender the Kentucky plate to the county clerk and keep proof of the transaction. Kentucky says to turn in the plate before canceling insurance when the registration will not remain current.
