What to do with Maryland plates after moving to Michigan

Complete the replacement record

Michigan provides no new-resident grace period. Schedule an office visit to apply for the vehicle title and registration as soon as residency is established.

Michigan No-Fault insurance is required for registration. Michigan expressly says out-of-state vehicle insurance is not accepted.

Maryland closeout

Return Maryland plates and wait for cancellation confirmation

Return the plates after the new registration is active. Maryland says to cancel insurance only after receiving confirmation that the plates were canceled.
