What to do with Massachusetts plates after moving to Michigan

The answer can be return, cancel, destroy, recycle, or keep. Follow the reviewed Massachusetts instruction only after the Michigan registration and insurance handoff are safe.

Complete the replacement record

Michigan provides no new-resident grace period. Schedule an office visit to apply for the vehicle title and registration as soon as residency is established.

Michigan No-Fault insurance is required for registration. Michigan expressly says out-of-state vehicle insurance is not accepted.

Massachusetts closeout

Cancel the Massachusetts registration and keep the receipt

After the new registration is active, cancel the Massachusetts registration, download the cancellation receipt, and provide it to the insurer before ending the Massachusetts policy. The plates do not go back to RMV; recycle or destroy them after cancellation.
