What to do with Massachusetts plates after moving to New Mexico

The answer can be return, cancel, destroy, recycle, or keep. Follow the reviewed Massachusetts instruction only after the New Mexico registration and insurance handoff are safe.

Complete the replacement record

Title and register at an MVD field office with the ownership document, odometer reading, identity, two New Mexico residency proofs, and insurance evidence. The current new-resident page does not publish a general day-count deadline.

Bring a current insurance card, policy copy, or insurer letter showing the required liability coverage.

Massachusetts closeout

Cancel the Massachusetts registration and keep the receipt

After the new registration is active, cancel the Massachusetts registration, download the cancellation receipt, and provide it to the insurer before ending the Massachusetts policy. The plates do not go back to RMV; recycle or destroy them after cancellation.

    Keep the issued registration or official receipt.
