What to do with Massachusetts plates after moving to Ohio
The answer can be return, cancel, destroy, recycle, or keep. Follow the reviewed Massachusetts instruction only after the Ohio registration and insurance handoff are safe.
Complete the replacement record
Ohio gives new residents 30 days to transfer the vehicle title and registration. Convert the out-of-state title through a county title office before registering at a deputy registrar.
Maintain financial responsibility accepted in Ohio while the former registration remains active and before operating on the Ohio registration.
Cancel the Massachusetts registration and keep the receipt
After the new registration is active, cancel the Massachusetts registration, download the cancellation receipt, and provide it to the insurer before ending the Massachusetts policy. The plates do not go back to RMV; recycle or destroy them after cancellation.
