What to do with Missouri plates after moving to Massachusetts

The answer can be return, cancel, destroy, recycle, or keep. Follow the reviewed Missouri instruction only after the Massachusetts registration and insurance handoff are safe.

Massachusetts comes first

Complete the replacement record

Massachusetts says to transfer the vehicle registration and title as soon as you become a resident; state law provides no registration grace period.

Obtain Massachusetts insurance before the vehicle transaction. A licensed Massachusetts insurance agent must stamp and sign the Registration and Title Application.

Destroy, recycle, or return unused Missouri plates

After the destination registration is active, remove the Missouri plates. Missouri says unused or expired plates may be destroyed and recycled where you are, returned to a Missouri license office, or mailed to the Department of Revenue's License Plate Surrender unit. Make an unexpired plate unusable and retain the new registration proof before disposal.
