What to do with New York plates after moving to Louisiana
The answer can be return, cancel, destroy, recycle, or keep. Follow the reviewed New York instruction only after the Louisiana registration and insurance handoff are safe.
Complete the replacement record
Apply for Louisiana registration within 30 days after establishing residency. State law also requires a valid Louisiana safety-inspection certificate within that period.
Bring proof of current liability insurance to the title and registration transaction.
Do not cancel New York insurance before surrendering plates
First activate the new registration, then surrender the New York plates and registration, obtain the FS-6T receipt, and only then end New York coverage. Reversing that order can create a registration and driver-license suspension.
