What to do with New York plates after moving to Oregon
The answer can be return, cancel, destroy, recycle, or keep. Follow the reviewed New York instruction only after the Oregon registration and insurance handoff are safe.
Complete the replacement record
Apply for Oregon title and registration within 30 days after becoming a resident. Oregon requires its title before it will issue the registration.
Maintain coverage that satisfies Oregon financial-responsibility law and make the required compliance statement on the title and registration application.
Do not cancel New York insurance before surrendering plates
First activate the new registration, then surrender the New York plates and registration, obtain the FS-6T receipt, and only then end New York coverage. Reversing that order can create a registration and driver-license suspension.
