Michigan provides no new-resident grace period. Schedule an office visit to apply for the vehicle title and registration as soon as residency is established.

Michigan No-Fault insurance is required for registration. Michigan expressly says out-of-state vehicle insurance is not accepted.

North Carolina closeout

Surrender the North Carolina plate before canceling insurance

Once the destination registration is active, return the North Carolina plate to NCDMV and request a receipt before terminating the North Carolina policy. NCDMV warns that canceling coverage first can trigger a civil penalty.
