What to do with Tennessee plates after moving to Michigan

Complete the replacement record

Michigan provides no new-resident grace period. Schedule an office visit to apply for the vehicle title and registration as soon as residency is established.

Michigan No-Fault insurance is required for registration. Michigan expressly says out-of-state vehicle insurance is not accepted.

Tennessee closeout

Cancel the Tennessee plate record before its insurance support ends

After the destination registration is active, complete Tennessee's Vehicle License Plates Cancellation form, select registered owner moved out of state, sign it, and email it to the Vehicle Services address printed on the form. Keep the completed form and sent-message record before ending the policy that supported the Tennessee registration.
