What to do with Virginia plates after moving to Michigan

The answer can be return, cancel, destroy, recycle, or keep. Follow the reviewed Virginia instruction only after the Michigan registration and insurance handoff are safe.

Michigan comes first

Complete the replacement record

Michigan provides no new-resident grace period. Schedule an office visit to apply for the vehicle title and registration as soon as residency is established.

Michigan No-Fault insurance is required for registration. Michigan expressly says out-of-state vehicle insurance is not accepted.

Virginia closeout

Never cancel Virginia insurance before surrendering or deactivating plates

Activate replacement coverage, register in the new state, then surrender or deactivate Virginia plates. Notify the former locality as well so personal-property tax does not continue.

    Keep the issued registration or official receipt.
